Well, I don't know about the others, Geoff, but I had a good ride on a sunny day. Our little Garmin issues didn't bother me much.
Thanks for leading,
Mark

Me too. And I enjoyed the lifeboat drill too.

Thanks for a nice day out, Geoff. You took us somewhere we haven't been (at least for a long while) down some lanes I had never ridden before, to an excellent pub, and the weather was just right. What's not to like.
I think we have all suffered the Garmin Gremlin from time to time, and it was just unlucky the Gremlin struck when it did. A factory reset will probably sort things out, if not a software update. You could also try it with another route file, in case there was something amiss with the route files.
Occasionally I have felt like throwing mine down a deep well, but I've heard it seldom helps.

I agree with all the above. An excellent ride out and I was only 7km short of the distance planned for the day!
Good to see the CTCSWL cohorts again and meet some new ones.

Dear Pam,Many thanks for your condolences, but don't worry, an email is good enough! But if you insist, you can send a card to my sister, Jane Parfitt at 239 Hartingdon Road, Brighton, BN2 3PA. As yet we don't have a fixed date for the funeral, but you are very welcome to attend if you have the time. It will take place in Kenley. Also you can extend this invitation to any Sou'Westers who knew my father. We too have hired a Gite the week before the Dieppe run, somewhere between Varengeville s Mer and Etretat. Alec is now on a pedal bike, but we're still coming with the bike trailer in case he gets tired or loses interest! See you thereBest Wishes
Tony

Sounds good Mark. I look forward to hearing how the UK side of the route compares with the French side.

Inspiring account...you make it sound so easy!

I see lots of small groups of French cyclists coming up the Wandle trail and up to London. It is signposted to Paris in Ravensbury Park. I did it a few years ago in fantastic weather and it is well worth doing.

Hans a very interesting article about the Royal Standard. Not sure if I will make it but have a good day. Weather forecast not good but hope it's not wet all day.
Just as a comment and being from Nottingham I am biased. I understood that the oldest Inn in England is the Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem built into the Castle Rock but I think that goes back to 1186?
Have a good day!
Jeff 15 May 2017 at 17:43 BST
There seem to be quite a few contenders for this title. The Royal Standard does qualify its claim with the word 'freehouse'.
Needless to say Wikipedia provides some further information on other claimants:

Thanks Mark for a great and memorable day out.
I re-traced the route to Boxley before heading south to use the much older Medway bridge at Aylesford. I re-joined the route before Wrotham but when I got inside the M25 I chose to head for the train at Knockholt in preference to riding home in the dark.
Sorry I missed the beer and pies.
Can we leave you to organise the weather every Wednesday?
Dave Vine 14 May 2017 at 21:43 BST
Thanks Mark for a super morning's ride. Sorry I missed the afternoon; it must have been a great achievement for all who made it to Canterbury.
Geoffrey left me at Otford station and I returned alone. To part compensate for the missed afternoon I took the offroad route up Betsom's Hill. After that it was Beddlestead Lane and the Coll de Skelly, and then mainly downhill to S Croydon and home.
Interesting your remarks about suitable bikes for offroad. Personally I preferred the Airnimal I used on the recce with its small wheels and 23/25mm tyres to the Condor. Not sure what the Compass tyre people would make of that.
