David, Thanks for an enjoyable and well thought out ice-dodging route. Apologies to all for my sudden departure. Sue hurt her arm this morning, so the 2 of us spent the afternoon in Kingston A&E for a precautionary check-up.

I'm not kidding, though as you probably know they also do cakes for grown-ups!

Hi Tony & Ged. Sorry I lost you on the way back from Horley to Banstead. I tried to hang on after Redhill Airport and I know that one or two of you waited but when I came to a junction with sign left to Redhill I followed it past the Crem/Cemetry, realising too late that I should have gone strait on up the hill. I hope that I did not cause anyone to wait too long. Home was via Wray Lane onto the A217 and a bash down the dual carriageway making sure that I did not exceed the 40MPH average speed camera's. Ha Ha! A good ride and at times well into "A" group average speed pushed along by Tony. 41 miles all told so a good ride for this time of year. Thanks.

Thanks for the update Mike. Glad you got home ok. Apologies for some lackadaisical back marking on the home run! (In fact we waited less than 5min, and Steve did a quick search for you but guessed you'd turned left into Philanthropic Road). You did well to miss the climb up Fullers Wood Lane!

Hi All again, this is your high altitude adviser on the North Downs at 213 m ASL. My Huawei (half smart phone but cleverer than me) says that it is 1 degC outside my house but having stepped outside it is a medium heavy drizzle and the snow on top of my soft top MGTF and windscreen is melting and can be brushed off by hand. So I would say that if this persists the roads through the gap to Dorking should be fine. Now that Ged/Tony have announced the lunch at Horley I will endevour to participate, it will be good exercise for me as last week I barely did 50 miles.

Mike, Just to confirm it started snowing in Walton le Hill at 4pm and we now have a good settleing and its freezing. I plan to go to Dorking if its safe to go down Box Hill or Pebble and meet at Dorking. I had thought that I would join the "B" ride but have seen no details. Safe cycling to all whatever you do!

It's interesting to compare the Map with the 2017 Heat Map. One noticeable difference is that the latter had more rides to the north and north west west of London, such as out to Marlow, Farnham and Iver. This may just reflect the rides attended rather than all rides. However for those planning and leading rides this year from Elevenses such as Walton, Addlestone or Weybridge, a route than ventures out north west may be worth considering. Whilst challenging, this could give Wayfarers a different riding experience and new areas to explore. Food for thought!

A few undulations meaning = The action of moving smoothly up & down. My Heart beat went off the scale. Leaving my i-watch unable to cope. It felt like we was emulating a trip up Kilimanjaro. At least the forthcoming hilly 50k, will just seem like a few speed humps!
Thank you for leading the ride, Ken.

Home for tea at 15;30, well before the second wave of heavy showers. Very good management of the ride around the weather forecast(s). I made it 37 miles door to door from Ashtead with 2,300 ft of climb (11.3mph). ( Brian and I took the slightly shorter hilly option via "Little Switzerland" to Headley rather than Box Hill.)
Great varied ride under the circumstances.
Similar, if lightly less miles than the B's, but considerably drier it seems.

Hello Keith, I had intended to go to Hersham this morning but at 8am it was cloud cover and rain @ 213m ASL Walton le Hill, so I decided I would go direct to Prince of Wales later but the the rain had really set in so I stayed at home. Well done Janice for back marking but mainly I should say I was rather short with my comment to you last week at Ellery Hall when you said "Mike 14 mph is hardly racing speed" You are right my comment was a knee jerk reaction and not very gentlemanly to a very fine lady with much cycling ability. I had just arrived as you were leaving and my brain was trying to catch its breath.

A lovely ride Mark. Dave and I did get to the Pheasantry for tea. We turned left at RHG and up the hill out of the Kingston Gate and into Bushy Park just over Kingston Bridge. Brian Bent joined us. Thanks for the ride.

When you wrote the previous article in 2105, I assume that was just before you discovered time travel??? :-D

In 5 years time those pedalling pure pushbikes will be considered as idiosyncratic as those riding fixies today.
Jeff 06 January 2019 at 18:23 GMT
I'm sure that Dave is right. With rampant global warming, we shall all be piloting pedalos.
