One unsung corner marker must try harder - not to loose 15 riders again!

A little postscript; I was having some trouble with my trusty bike on this ride, and spent about an hour when I got home cleaning it up and getting the gears working properly again. (It was in a disgraceful condition). Took it for repair on Friday as it was still not making an odd noise and didn't feel right. Sadly the frame has finally broken after 25 years of carrying me around. :-( RIP Blue Giant, many happy memories.
But lucky me, I'll be out on new wheels this week...every cloud has a silver lining!

Well said! As we will all remember from our school physics lessons(?), gearing doesn't change the amount of work you have to do to get a weight up a hill. You can pedal hard for a short time, or gently for a long time - the amount of work you have to put into the bike will be the same, ignoring any side-effects such as busting a blood vessel.
If you want to do less work, reduce the weight, or the height of the hill. Or turn around and go in the other direction (downhill).

Thank you for a great ride, many places along the river to visit by foot.

Ged may I add my belated thanks, it was a great day out until stupid me tried to emulate the BMX gang, pulled my foot out the pedal, seriously straining my left calf muscle, when will I ever learn! Anyway still managed to ride the SCCU sporting 10 and 25TT over the weekend but very poor times.

Hi Ged, very efficient posting this early. I plan to go direct to elevenses see you there. May well give tea a miss and go to see friend on Clapham Common though tea in Earlsfield sounds enticing.

Pete very interesting, I tried to follow the route via Loxhill on the way to the Merry Harriers but some how missed the turn. I must ask the brother of a friend that runs the steam train trust at the Metropolitan Water Board Steam Engine Trust at Kempton if he knows more?

For me it was an exercise in Solo riding into the wind and finding my way on an old map. All in all 64 grueling miles even missing out Leith Hill, the final relative ease of surmounting Box Hill was causing me to crack up. At least I was able to deliver the Hilly 50 receipt for Simon L to Hans.
By the way it's a Lion not a Bear!

Hi Hans don't fancy such a long ride to lunch and more to the point the lousy ride to Addleston, so contemplating meeting you for lunch! A spinnaker may help but keep the Mainsail down or you will capsize! Would you by any chance be lunching at the Merry Harriers & more importantly will Simon L be with you, I have a receipt of £656 from St. Raphael's for Hilly 50 which I would like to present to him.
