Good news: The southern part of this cycle path is now resurfaced with wide, smooth tarmac and very rideable (green dotted line within the red rectangle).

Bad news: the bit just before it, from the waterworks and including the half-dozen steps, has not been touched. The improved part seems to rejoin the road just by the steps. In my view, it's worth pushing up or round the steps to use the cyclepath all the way from Guildford to Shalford.
