B Group Ride and Christmas Lunch - 3/12/25

Clear skies and bright sunshine is always a welcome prospect for a December ride. Fortunately we were blessed with both today. Around two dozen B group cyclists had signed up for today’s ride and most met at Cobham RBL. Sue F and Dave V made a presentation to the RBL staff in grateful recognition of their services and hospitality on a monthly basis throughout the year.

Three groups led by John A, Tim G and Mick A eagerly departed for a scenic trip via Downside, Stoke D’Abernon, West End, Esher and Claygate to the “Angel Inn’ at Long Ditton. Only two puncture incidents marred the otherwise seamless ride along relatively familiar lanes and pathways. Team TG had a photo opportunity outside the Wayneflete Tower, an historical gatehouse which once formed part of Esher Palace established by William Wayneflete, bishop of Winchester, in 1462.

Together with everyone who made their own way to the pub we gathered and finally took our places to enjoy our annual Christmas lunch. We were promptly and efficiently served by the catering staff who did a great job of meeting everyone’s requirements. A festive (if somewhat noisy) atmosphere soon prevailed as everyone enjoyed their food and drink. We first used this venue in 2016 and we have since always been very satisfied with the service provided. The number attending this year was particularly encouraging.

Many thanks to Paula B who mad all the necessary arrangements to make today’s occasion a success. Also to Ian W for devising the quiz and all the subbies and back markers who led us along  our morning ride.

A good day had by all !
