Unfortunately, I was unable to ride lead that day but my trusted subbies Stephen and John A were there to safely lead their small groups.
The weather for the ride, from Walton to Stoke D’Abernon, was excellent - blue sky, sunny and hot, but not oppressive.
The first group of 4 (Stephen, Dave C, Mick and Tim G back marking), and the second group of 6 (John A, Grant, Tim C back-marking, Ray Y, Peter B, Alan I) made good progress along pleasant and not-too-busy roads to Chobham, and on to lunch at ‘Spoons’ in Woking. Overall a fairly flat morning’s ride.
The afternoon route included the main climb of the day, up Trodds Lane to Newlands Corner. The reward was a lovely ride along the (dry) North Downs Way path, where they passed several youngsters also enjoying the Surrey countryside. From there, a fast descent down Green Dene and onwards, via Effingham, to some very welcome tea or cold drinks at Stoke D’Abernon.
Overall a splendid day of riding in perfect weather. My thanks to Stephen, John A, their back-markers and all who came along on the ride.
Francis
