We all missed Simon L's C and M ride so he kindly let us use his cycle route.
Christina, Alan and Carolyn caught the train to start at Datchet on Sunday 6th July.
A cycle trip down memory lane for Carolyn as she lived in Marlow in her teenage years.
Unfortunately her Garmin route took us all on a circumnavigation of Taplow twice. On
reflection, “one” should stop if your instincts tell you, you're going in the wrong direction!!
On to Cookham Dean and downhill at Winterhill, past Longridge, where Carolyn's father
worked as the Watersports Instructor. He later left to continue his career in Electrical
Engineering with the Army, joining the forces in the Falklands War.
Over Marlow Suspension Bridge, a Grade 1 Listed Building. The Architect William
Tierney Clark, also designed the Budapest Suspension Bridge over River Danube. Also
known as Szechenyi Chain Bridge.
We all had a pit stop in Higginson Park, Marlow where the cafe serves delicious coffee, and
to keep out of the rain for 30 minutes. The weather was very changeable, rain , quite warm
though and with the rumble of thunder in the distance. We dried off then got wet, but this
was cool for climbing and a pleasant change from the recent heat of 30 degrees.
Carolyn led us out of Marlow up into the Chilterns to Turville Heath. Turville, is an English
Village and location for numerous TV productions. Our photo was taken with the Windmill
featured in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Other TV productions at Turville, have been “The
Vicar of Dibley” , “Midsomer Murders”, “Lewis”, and “Killing Eve”. Films shot in
Turville include “Goodnight Mr Tom” and “The Day of the Triffids”
Now with Alan and Christina at the helm, cycling onwards to Oxford on lovely quiet country
roads where you could hear the singing of the Red Kites.
